ABSTRACT

At about 3 years old, the first group games emerge. Here children share ideas and begin to help each other. It is starting to be social in the real sense, with sympathy and comradeship. It is a manifestation of the beginning of solid friendliness between equals. This leap forward depends upon a child’s growing capacity to feel a coherent person in a world of other people. This in turn is dependent not only upon an intellectual grasp of the similarities and differences of self and other, but also on an emotional capacity for sympathy and empathy-this term is used to indicate an emotional sympathy for another person that discriminates further by using intellectual thoughtfulness. Then, out of ordinary everyday friendly sympathy and empathy, comes fondness, love, identifying with others; and from this comes the ability to disagree but still be friends (Emanuel, 2005).
