ABSTRACT

Sincetheearly1980swhenGarnerandcolleaguesproposedthat psychoeducationwouldhelpeating-disorderedpatientsdiscontinueeating-disorderedthoughtsandbehaviors,ithasbecomeastandardcomponentofeatingdisordertreatment(Garneretal.,1982;Garneretal.,1985; Garner,1997).Nutritioncounselorsshouldbefamiliarwiththeeducationaltopicsimportantintreatmentofeatingdisordersarticulatedby Garner(1997),Fairburnetal.(1993),andTobinandJohnson(1991): biologicalfactsassociatedwithbodyweightandstarvation,theineffectivenessofvariousmethodsofpurgingforweightcontrol,thehealthconsequencesofeatingdisorders,andtheculturalaspectsofeatingdisorders. Thischaptersummarizesthesesubjectsandadditionaltopicsfundamentaltonutritiontreatmentofeatingdisorders.
