ABSTRACT

Evolution of the karst has been characterized by multiple phases of uplift in competition with karstic erosion. Uplift created an original plateau, and a fengcong-depression karst evolved from the fenglin landscape on the paleo-peneplain. The basal plain of the fenglin was transformed into a fengcong landscape, with stream-sinks, dolines, and shafts developing in the new depressions as new underground river systems expanded beneath. The evolutionary sequence is matched by the succession of landscape styles down the length of the Hongshui River, from the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau to the Guangxi Basin. These are, in order downstream: the Guizhou karst plateau with residual karstic hills, then

fenglin valley or basin, then fengcong-valley (or with shallow depressions), then fengcong with deep depressions or gorges, and finally the Guangxi fenglin plain.
