ABSTRACT

Karst is a widespread and important phenomenon in mainland Southeast Asia. The countries of Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, and mainland Malaysia all contain significant limestone karst areas, which cover around 215000 km2, or 10% of the region. Large areas of sandstone and buried evaporite karst are also present. The karst occurs mostly on carbonate rocks older than Jurassic, with the Permian and Carboniferous being the most important, located primarily on structural highs in association with Paleozoic and Mesozoic formations.
