ABSTRACT

Karst bauxites are known to exist in New Guinea, but there is no specific information available about them. Bauxite formation began in the Pleistocene and continues up to the present day. The deposits accumulated in dolines on polygonal karsts. Bauxites and bauxite-like deposits have been described from New Ireland, Sorgeri, Bereina, and Cape Nelson (Hughes, 1990). In Oceania, further occurrences are known from the Philippines, the Solomon Islands, and the Loyalty Islands.
