ABSTRACT
Habeas corpus literally means, “you have the body.” In this case, the “body” being referred to is the living body of a prisoner. A writ of habeas corpus is a demand that a jailer or prison official bring the prisoner to court and defend the legality of the imprisonment. In other words, it provides a means for inmates to challenge their confinement. It is sometimes referred to as the “Great Writ.”
