ABSTRACT

People in other parts of the world, on the other hand, can drive for six hours-or even much less-in any direction and encounter several language groups. What this illustrates is that many of us in the United States are linguistically landlocked. Except for those of you living near ethnic enclaves in major metropolitan centers or those of you living in a border state, we in the United States are largely, but not totally, of course, surrounded by linguistic sameness; the English language.
