Kitchen tables, which derive from the Latin tabula, are the heart of action and the location of the batterie de cuisine, from which comes family and institutional meals. Although many cooks, such as traditional Armenians and Amazonian natives, squat alongside a central fire or ceramic pit oven to prepare food and bake bread, the table is the current standard work station.
