ABSTRACT

Neuroscience.—A computational analysis is a logical analysis (→LOGIC) of the qualities required of any system, whether biological or artificial, to accomplish a given task. David Marr was among the first to stress the importance of this type of analysis. A computational analysis thus requires a clear, step-by-step description of the different information-processing operations involved in the task (→INFORMATION). In vision, for example, figure-ground separation is one of the unavoidable steps that any visual recognition system must carry out to identify an object (→PERCEPTION).
