ABSTRACT

Philosophy.—Normativity is the property of activities or states of affairs that makes them subject to rules and capable of being evaluated. Prescriptions and assessments pertaining to what a person should do (moral norms) or what a person should think (epistemic norms; →EPISTEMIC) can be distinguished from those relating to the way a biological or social structure is expected to function (functional norms).
