ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the type of information that can be obtained from a microscopic examination of activated sludge. Applications of this information to the diagnosis and resolution of activated sludge solids separation problems are presented. A discussion of the use of protozoa and higher life form characterization in activated sludge was presented in Chapter 2. The methods used to differentiate between microbial and process-related solids separation problems are presented in Chapter 4. A discussion of the use of microscopic methods and testing procedures related to foaming is reserved for Chapter 5.
