ABSTRACT

From our almost 50 years of working with interns, we have concluded that the success of a student's internship experience isdetermined principally by two factors: the quality of relationships with supervisors, support staff, and the site's clientele and the amount of effort invested in learning. In this chapter we address the realities of the internship setting, site supe rvision, the development of supervisory roles, building relationships th at promote learning, and maximizing the benefits of supervision. We conclude by addressing problems that might arise in the work setting and identify some of the typical challenges th at interns can face.
