ABSTRACT

The "Change Chart" can be diagrammed by SAM, or therapists can present blank charts to clients in a 2 x 2 x 2 matrix format. Structurally, this intervention encompasses the following elements: (1) decisional options (e.g., to enter a group vs. to refrain from joining a group; to prevent further episodes of sexually compulsive activities vs. to continue to act in sexually compulsive ways); (2) the anticipated consequences of each option, both immediate and delayed; and (3) the anticipated positive and negative consequences within each time frame. In other words, clients will generate and explore positive and negative consequences for each option, as they are expected to occur immediately after the decision is enacted, and as they are expected to occur in the long term. Following consideration of consequences individually, they are assessed globally. After weighing both sides, an informed decision can be made.
