ABSTRACT
In Fully Human, Fully Alive, gay writer and former Catholic brother, Salvatore Sapienza, reminisces about his friendship with Father Mychal Judge, a Roman Catholic Franciscan priest. During his forty years as a priest, Father Judge ministered to people with AIDS and was a long-term member of Dignity, a gay Catholic group. His last assignment was as Chaplain of the Fire Department of New York City. On the morning of September 11, 2001, Father Judge rushed to the World Trade Center, where he was among the first victims killed when the towers collapsed. A photograph of Father Judge’s body being carried from the rubble has become one of the most famous images of that day. Since his death, there has been a growing movement to have Father Judge canonized as the first openly gay saint in the Catholic Church.
