ABSTRACT

Research on lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) populations too often has relied upon theoretical models that lack sufficient complexity and fail to specify crucial variables that explain differences between individuals, couples, or families (Meezan & Martin, 2003). The passage of time is one such variable that is especially important with respect to LGBT lives, and its neglect is a significant shortcoming in much of the research in this area. Cultural changes and historical events regularly transform the way that individuals and groups in societies describe and specify their self-identities.
