ABSTRACT

ATTITUDES TO TRAINING within the magazine publishing industry have changed significantly in recent years.

Not so long ago it was the conventional wisdom that the only training really worth having was ‘on the job’. It was relatively recently that the realisation dawned that learning through a painful process of making mistakes was expensive, disruptive and probably largely unnecessary. Learning processes based on trial and error have an unfortunate tendency to lead to a rash of mistakes and editorial solecisms which may entertain readers but do little to keep down editors’ blood pressures.
