ABSTRACT

If they are honest, most people can recall moments when it has been enjoyable to ‘slump’ in front of the television or even sleep in front of it. After a day of work or domestic stress it can be soothing to bask in the breathing space afforded by a halfwatched programme-especially one we would otherwise regard as banal. Television can be very useful for blotting out the world and lulling us into a restful, uninvolved daze.
