ABSTRACT

By now you will have gained a real sense of the importance of student voice in the classroom, the contribution of the voices of family and community and the realities of building a curriculum with these voices as a central focus. In this chapter, I outline in detail additional suggestions for developing book themes that will extend the concepts presented earlier. Teachers should feel completely comfortable about interpreting and carrying out the ideas in any way that is appropriate to their particular classroom experience. All the suggestions that follow should be seen within the context of a transformative pedagogy in which the teacher is seeking a collaboration between classroom, student, family, and community.
