ABSTRACT

In our journals we often discover our plays. The following set of journal entries trace the odyssey of the play, A Small Delegation, from its genesis while teaching in China, to its eventual produc tion in China by the China Youth Arts Theatre. The first journals were kept in the summer of 1987 on an initial trip. At the start of the journals I had no intention of writing a play, but only wanted to record the events of the journey. The second set of journals is dated April 1995, and was kept during the Chinese production of the play, four years after the writing of the play and several U.S. productions. The circularity of the journals starting in Beijing and eventually coming back to Beijing is a reminder of the connected ness of our lives and our work, each flowing into the other, if we are open to opportunity. If the world invites, answer “yes.”
