ABSTRACT

The subjects of our plays often choose us. Something we have read or heard or seen or dreamt, or a place we have traveled to, catches our imagination and doesn’t let go, and we are off.

One of the things IVe enjoyed about being a playwright is the varied canvas for writing projects its afforded. I started out to be just a playwright, but theres no such thing. There’s hardly a play wright I know who hasn’t also written a film, written for television, composed poetry and short stories, attempted a novel, a children’s book, magazine articles, and a nonfiction book, as well as done the book for a musical. Almost every playwright I know has authored some kind of adaptation, whether from fiction or fact.
