Sir Peter Hall created the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1960. He was subsequently director of the National Theatre for fifteen years and opened the new South Bank complex. In 1999 and 2001, he directed three Shakespeare plays at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles. At the time of this interview in September of 2001, he was rehearsing

at the Lyric Opera in Chicago. Though Sir Peter is in his seventies, his international directing career — including both plays and operas — continues unabated.
