ABSTRACT

Technique is a dirty word in some people's book. But technique is a wonderful and necessary thing and is used by everyone, whether they acknowledge it or not. For example, imagine having to do a dozen or more takes of the same scene on a film set without using technique. The trick is to do one thing, then another, and then another. Work out the order to do them so that the audience members can clearly understand what each piece is telling them without their getting confused. Technique such as one-by-one is simply a way of getting results that look natural, believable, and spontaneous. If the complaint then is that this seems to be working from the outside-in, so be it. Working back from a finished result to the reason why it arose is a great technique for getting excellent performance values.
