ABSTRACT

This chapter talks about the actors who feel they are drowning in a sea of troubles and need a life belt. Other actors onstage can and should help to pull focus to the speaker by aligning their bodies, giving them their eye line and making sure that the audience is looking in the right place. Of course, pulling focus when it is not the right time for the audience to look at you is called upstaging and is punished in the usual ways. Never forget, in theatre you are pushing out to the audience, but on-screen you are pulling them in, so for a screen reading you can never be too soft. You might hear the expression "pulling focus" when you are acting onscreen, but this time it means that the camera is going to change focus from one character to another.
