Nobody can guarantee a truly great performance. After all, greatness is a truly mysterious thing. But I can give you a few tips about how you might be able to improve the chances of giving at least a “good” performance. First, strive to be honest, both with yourself and with your audience. If during rehearsals a line sounds “tinny,” ringing false time

and again, cut it. Make the most of such an editing privilege. Believe me, it’s rare for a performer. In my attempt to establish a truthful relationship with audiences, I sometimes think about an expression I’ve heard in both writing and performing circles, “from the heart to the heart.” In other words, that which is spoken or shared from the heart of one person is most apt to move the heart of another.
