ABSTRACT

Games, forms of play with consensually vali-dated sets of rules, assist in the socialization and personality formation of the individual. The structure and dynamics of various games often reflect specific traits, values, expectations, and kinds of social control within a given culture. For adults, games may maintain existing societal forms, or resolve perceived conflicts and threats in the social world (cf. Caillois, 1961; Erikson, 1950; Huizinga, 1955; Piaget, 1951; Robbins,

1955; Strauss, 1956; Sutton-Smith and Roberts, 1963).
