ABSTRACT

Teams are touted these days as a solution tomany organizational ills. Whether it is product development teams at General Motors or Procter and Gamble, groups to implement manufacturing innovations in the aerospace industry (Kazanjian & Drazin, 1988), or quality circles, teams are proliferating. These teams are seen as a vehicle to shorten product development time, improve commitment and performance, and help companies compete in a global economy (Hackman & Walton, 1986; Kanter, 1986).
