ABSTRACT

The eponym of Balint syndrome was first introduced in neurological parlance by Hécaen and Ajuriaguerra (1954) to acknowledge the out-standing contribution that the Hungarian physician Reszö Balint made in 1909 to the identification of some of the spatial behaviour disorders that ensue bilateral damage to the posterior parietal lobe. Although the spectrum of these deficits is larger than that reported in this paper and Balint (1909) was not the first to draw attention to them, he must receive full credit for having carefully analysed the symptoms of attentional disorders and misreaching and established their association with parietal damage.
