ABSTRACT

In 1940 Van Wagenen and Herren reported the first 10 of more than 30 cases in whom they divided the corpus callosum to prevent interhemispheric propagation of seizures. The surgery consisted of partial or complete division of the corpus callosum and fornix in a single operation or in several stages. One-third of the patients had a partial callosotomy involving predominantly the genu and the body of the callosum. In half of these patients the anterior two-thirds of the splenium were also divided. Two patients-one with partial, one with complete callosal section-underwent additional division of the anterior commissure.
