ABSTRACT

Recycling of urban and industrial wastes for agricultural land fertilization needs a suitable control of these materials before field application. Recently, a draft proposal for compost specifications has been presented to the Commission of European Comunities by Zucconi and De Bertoldi (1); according to these Authors, compost is defined as “a self stabililized and sanitized product of controlled bioxidative degradation of heterogeneous organic matter in a solid state (composting).” Compost should be as “a phytoergonic product which undergoes a slow humification process (stabilization, having past the fast metabolic stage of initial decomposition”.
