When you switch on your computer or mobile device, what are you after? Information is sought for many reasons, and what’s sought ranges from simple facts or predictions to emotional guidance or explanations of complicated ideas. You may want a simple Yes or No answer to a question-e.g. ‘Is it going to rain today?’—or a downloadable copy of Wuthering Heights. You could be a school pupil, an undertaker or an astronaut. You might hope to be calmed and reassured, or to look for a new challenge. You could be in a forest, an office, a library, a bedroom, or a bus shelter.
