ABSTRACT

In this paper Judith Albino summarizes some of the forces accounting for several of the current difficulties experienced in higher education, and the nature of the challenges consequently faced by presidents and other senior managers working in academia. Using as examples her experiences as chief executive officer (CEO) of a large public, multidisciplinary state university and a small, private, independent, professional school, she discusses the forms of leadership and “followership” needed in modern academic settings. She further details how her own leadership style was influenced by her background as an academic research psychologist who was guided by the values integral to community psychology and feminist philosophy.
