ABSTRACT

The terms European Union, European Community(ies), Common Market, Internal Market do not refer to the same organisation but are often used inter-changeably. Some definitions are required to clarify things:

• The European Union, established among the 12 Member States by the Maastricht Treaty, is merely a stage in the process of creating a closer union among the peoples of Europe. It adds new dimensions to the original Treaties which founded the European Communities. It does not replace them.
