Introduction

Library and information professionals are currently operating in a rapidly changing environment. Technological developments are a major driving force for change. There is a paradigm shift from paper to electronic media as the primary form of information storage and retrieval. There are also moves towards end-user searching, and teleworking which have a significant impact upon the way in which information services need to be used. Indeed, one might say that organisations are becoming both technology rich and information enabled.
