ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with two categories of business information which, unlike all the others, report not on a particular ‘domain’, but on the external environment as a whole. The large and prominent group of ‘business news sources’ trawls the environment for significant changes, while the smaller group of industry sources trawls for business information of relevance to particular industries. These two categories of business information have little else in common and will be treated separately here. It is difficult to know which of these groups to allocate the minority of sources which report only news for a particular industry, however, the following definitions clarify the way the terms are used in this chapter:

Sources reporting or recording information on the external environment which is of commercial significance to a particular industry.
