ABSTRACT

Web directories differ from Web search and metasearch engines in that they lend themselves to browsing, although most can also be searched. Directories offer hierarchically organised lists of links, sometimes with either brief or expansive annotations. Inevitably the coverage of directories is much reduced compared to that of the Web search engines because they require an element of human intervention in their creation-they typically cover hundreds of thousands of Web sites rather than millions of Web pages.
