ABSTRACT

Many different types of signs-both handmade and mass produced-were carried in the protest. Groups such as the United Auto Workers produced signs with slogans such as "UAW Says Jobs and Freedom for Every American," and a young Black woman carried a sign reading "Not 'Negroes' but AfroAmericans! We must Be Accorded Full Rights as Americans Not in the Future but Now." The photograph included above, taken by Warren K. Lefler, shows protestors with some of the mass-produced placards that were carried in the march, including ones that demanded "Equal Rights," "Integrated Schools," "Ending Bias," and "Decent Housing."
