ABSTRACT

In this chapter I will review three signi®cant developments in psychoanalytic thinking that have taken place over the last few decades. The ®rst is by a group of psychoanalysts who have developed a relational perspective, the most notable names here being Mitchell, Greenberg, Stern, Benjamin and also Ogden, whose thinking has already been reviewed in the previous chapter. The second closely related development has come to be known as intersubjectivity theory and the most prominent names here are Stolorow, Atwood, Brandchaft and Orange. Finally I will brie¯y refer to the thinking of Schafer. Taken together these developments represent a signi®cant shift from Freud's theory and practice of psychoanalysis.
