ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at how ambiguous symptoms can play a special role in the evolution of attachment relationships between healthcare workers and their patients. Ambiguous symptoms are open to many interpretations; in particular they can be seen as having physical and/or psychological explanations, and their presentation can be part of a person’s desire for comfort. They are a fertile ground for personal interpretation, as they may or may not signify ‘danger’. Attachment strategies will be revealed, in part depending on how their overtures are responded to.
