ABSTRACT

The diagnosis of anorexia nervosa is tethered to clear parameters such as weight and health-care professionals are more adept at diagnosing it. On the other hand, bulimia can be harder to spot, and studies suggest that most cases are never properly diagnosed or treated. Typically, men with bulimia nervosa have a normal or slightly above normal weight, even though that weight may ¯uctuate markedly. Some men with binge eating problems will have developed signi®cant overweight. Words like bingeing can feel hard to de®ne, and the essence of bulimia nervosa is the emotional motivation behind the overeating. This becomes a subject of judgement.
