ABSTRACT

Men with body image problems and eating disorders suffer tremendous physical and psychological distress. We know how to treat these illnesses and the remedies are quite effective. So why aren't men with eating disorders accessing treatment as readily as women? Although at least 10 per cent of people with eating disorders are men, a far lower proportion receives treatment from specialist eating disorder services. In some services, less than 1 per cent of their patients are men. What are the barriers to recovery?
