ABSTRACT

In this chapter we look at the topics defined as news by the mass media in our ten countries. Topic is an interesting variable when looked at from the perspectives of both biological and cultural evolution. On the one hand, biological evolution might predict that the same news topics would be of innate interest to humans all around the globe. On the other hand, cultural evolution might predict differences among countries based on culturally defined ideas of what is important. As it turns out, we find both significant similarities and differences.
