ABSTRACT

The interstitial space includes the connective tissues that intervene among cells, blood capillaries, and lymph vessels. The volume of the space is about 15% of body weight.

It is also an extravascular fluid system that is generated by capillary filtration (Figure 15.1). The extravascular flow system functions to support the tissue’s metabolic demands and to maintain an optimal and stable environment for the cells. This is the space in which hydrostatic pressures are measured for clinical purposes and for research to determine limits for tissue nutrition and viability.
