ABSTRACT
The following list is extensive but not exhaustive. ere are sure to be some omissions. Some roles might also t into more than one category or might be cast in dierent ways in dierent productions. is is simply a list as prescribed by the German opera houses. Some roles have changed their casting since this list was written out for me, and some have changed in our perceptions of them in the last twenty years or so. It is a guide with real merit, but it is not infallible, and some will actually disagree with it. I have included some roles not generally performed in Germany in the interest of being as complete as possible. ose listed without arias have much to sing, but no excerpts.
