ABSTRACT

Imagine for a moment the following two scenarios. First, an adolescent is sitting at a table that is covered with five hundred cardboard pieces of varying shapes. According to the box that has been tossed to the side, these pieces will recreate Seurat’s painting “Study for Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte” if assembled properly. Second, another youth sits staring at the pages of an open book. The text is Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, and the student has been given the assignment to read the play by tomorrow’s class.
