ABSTRACT

Although routinely merged into a single demographic group, Latinos, in fact, constitute a highly diversified multiracial and intermixed ethnicity of persons from European, African, and Native American ancestries with a variegated spectrum of skin colors.1 Mestizos, Latinos of European and Native American extraction, and their descendants constitute a majority of the populations of Mexico, and several countries in Central and South America. In contrast, mulattos, Latinos of African and European descent, predominate in Caribbean countries. Notwithstanding differences among subgroups, Latinos are unified by a common language, cultural traditions, historical similarities, and religious beliefs.1
