ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with the photochemical reactions of hypervalent iodine compounds, especially organoiodine(III) species. Although there has been an increasing interest in the synthetic use of hypervalent iodine compounds,

the photochemical study is very limited. Recently, remarkable progress has been made in the use of diaryliodonium salts as photoinitiators for cationic polymerization and as photoacid generators for imaging systems. On the other hand, the photochemical applications of hypervalent iodine compounds to organic synthesis have been found in the reactions accompanying generation of alkyl and alkoxy radicals, carbene formation, halogenation, and arylation.
