ABSTRACT
The active species in Type II photooxygenation reactions is molecular oxygen in its first excited singlet state, as already postulated by Kautsky et al.
This has been unambiguously proven by the elegant experiments performed by Foote et al., in which reactions of photochemically generated singlet molecular oxygen were compared with the corresponding reactions of the active oxygen formed in the hypochlorite/ hydrogen peroxide system.
