ABSTRACT

Once upon a time there was a king who was pious and godfearing, and he honored the holy souls in purgatory in a special way. Every morning he had a large oven full of fresh bread baked for them to show them some kindness. The Lord also sent him a little donkey with two baskets made out of rafia, * in which the king packed the bread, and the little donkey took everything to the holy souls in purgatory. Soon, however, the king became sick, for his time had come. When he felt that he was about to die, he called his only son, Spadònia, to him and said, “It’s time for me to die. Promise me that you will do the same thing I’ve done for so many years. Every morning you must have bread baked for the poor souls in purgatory and load it onto the little donkey.”
