ABSTRACT

SEVERAL YEARS AGO, WE WROTE THE INDUSTRY’S FIRST WHITE PAPER ON THE INTRANET, entitled “The Intranet: Implementation of Internet and Web Technologies In Organizational Information Systems” (https://www.hummingbird.com/whites/intranet.html). The embryonic state of the Internet gave us license to elaborate on the potential use of Web technologies in business and organizational environments. The discussion was based on the premise that the enabling technologies of the Web-TCP/IP, HTTP/CGI, and HTML-would form the foundation of sophisticated business information systems now called intranets. Since then, the success of Internet and Web technologies in facilitating the development of information systems has been astounding. The Web browser rapidly emerged as the universal interface to organizational information, and Web servers have become pillars of electronic commerce.
