ABSTRACT

South Asia's Indo-Gangetic Plains is a 120,000-sq. km area stretching from Pakistan, through Nepal and India to Bangladesh. This area was the cradle of the 1960's Green Revolution. Using improved wheat and rice varieties, irrigation, and higher doses of fertilizers, farmers doubled rice production and boosted wheat output by almost five times in just three decades. This resulted in a steady rise in rural incomes and employment and vastly improved food security in the region.
